History of Anthurium by Heidi Richards Mooney

Meaning- I love you, I want you

The Anthurium andraenam Andre is a native of Colombia , and belongs to the family Araceae which includes more than 100 genera and about 1500 species, mainly from the tropics. Some of the better known members of the family include the pig-tail anthurium, philodendron, monstera, taro vine, taro, calla lily, caladium,'ape', aglonema, and diffenbachia, most of which grow under conditions of low light and high humidity.

Anthurium originally from Mexico , is a tropical perennial with big, heart shaped flowers and shiny, dark green foliage. The blooms or spathe (modified leaf) seen in white, pink, red, cream or green can last up to 8 weeks. This beautiful foliage plant, blooms almost continuously in good conditions. It is an excellent plant for interiors and as cut flower arrangements.

The anthurium was first brought to Hawaii from London in 1889 by S.M. Damon. After over 100 years of cultivation and hybridization the Hawaiian anthurium is one of the islands' principal ornamental exports to the U.S. Mainland, Canada , Japan , Italy , Germany , and other countries.
